Trusts and foundations can be a fantastic source of funding if your charity meets their criteria. We’ve put together a quick list of things to consider before making your approach.
1. Does the Trust have a history of supporting your cause or similar?
Go through their funding criteria with a fine tooth comb and ensure the foundation is sympathetic to your charity’s cause. A good way to uncover their areas of support is to check which charities they have funded in the past, it might be the trust is a big advocator for mental health or women’s rights and only funds in that field.
2. Is the Trust or Foundation accepting applications?
Sufficient research before applying to the foundation is key on this one. Do they have deadlines? Are they starting up, or closing down? Do they accept unsolicited applications? Make each application count.
3. Are you familiar with their application process?
An ill-conceived application could do your cause more harm than good, make sure you are approaching the foundation in the right way and making the best possible case for your charity. It may be worth hiring a professional with experience of grant applications to advise you or help you develop the most compelling bid.
4. Does your charity have existing connections with the Trust that could help with the application process?
Research the board of trustees of the foundation that you’re applying to, your charity might already have a long-standing connection that could make the whole process a lot smoother.
5. Remember trusts are really there to support good causes.
Make it as easy as possible for them to support you. Be succinct, clear, and demonstrate how your work will help them achieve their goals.
