A day in the life of a trust and foundation funder – what they wish you knew

Being a trust or foundation funder isn’t the dream job you might imagine. Take a moment to think about being inundated with applications from hundreds of charities, all working to make the world a better place.

The number of applications you receive far outnumbers the amount you can ever fund AND you have the task of deciding which organisation will make the most impact while adhering to your own charitable objectives. To make funders lives a little easier we’re sharing four things they wished you knew before starting your application.

1. Research is a funders best friend

Funders can receive hundreds of bids a day and it’s a waste of their time trawling through applications from organisations that clearly haven’t read their funding criteria. Make sure you do your homework before getting started and go through the funder’s guidelines with a fine tooth comb. Do your research to make sure they’ve funded organisations and programmes similar to your own and that your needs help the funder deliver on their charitable goals.

2. They read a lot of applications….

So make yours stand out! Make sure your application is succinct and enjoyable to read. A well written two-page application telling the funder everything they need to know will be much better received than a ten-pager full of waffle. Use it as an opportunity to tell your organisation’s story, highlight your impact and show the funder how well your work aligns with their goals. But keep it factual and backed up with any documentation the funder asks to see.

3. What other people think matters

Before sending off your application get someone outside of your organisation to read your bid and tell you what they think. Is it emotive, impactful and moving? If you can’t convince your mates of the value and impact of your organisation, then you’re unlikely to move a seasoned funder.

4. Timing is everything

Find out when the trust meets to review applications and get yours in with time to spare. Make sure you don’t write a rushed or poorly-thought out application that will ruin your chances of securing funding from what might have otherwise been an ideal funder.
