With half term already upon us, we’re diving into eight foundations empowering education in the UK.
The Artemis Charitable Foundation
Since 2007, the fund manager Artemis has given a portion of their profits to The Artemis Charitable Foundation to support core charities in the UK and internationally in the areas of poverty, education and the environment. In 2022, the Artemis Charitable Foundation supported 70 charities, giving away over £1 million.
BA Better World Community Fund
For the last 30 years, British Airways has supported community initiatives across the world. The BA Better World Community Fund seeks to deepen the airline’s positive impact by offering up to £15,000 in extra funding to eligible projects that crowdfund. Open to all UK charities and social enterprises whose work is aligned with the BA Better World vision.
The Edgar E Lawley Foundation
The Edgar E Lawley Foundation supports charities and not-for-profits in the UK in the areas of medicine (to necessitous elderly persons) and education with reference to the arts, commerce and industry.
The foundation grants programme has previously amounted to approximately £240,000 annually with a typical grant in the region of £1,500. The grant round for 2023/24 (April to March) opened on 1 August 2023 and closes on 31 October 2023.
Funds for Women Graduates
Funds for Women Graduates is an educational charity that promotes the higher education and wider learning of postgraduate students by awarding grants to assist with their living expenses. To apply you must be registered for study or research at an approved institution of higher education in Great Britain. Foundation Grants can be up to £6,000 and are awarded in July for the following academic year.
Impetus
Impetus exists to transform the lives of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, by making sure they get the right support to succeed in school, work and life. The foundation provides charities with long-term, unrestricted core funding, the expertise of a dedicated investment team and access to a pro bono network. The foundation also offers a range of funding to help disadvantaged young people access employment, education and leadership opportunities.
Skinners’ Charity Foundation
Skinners’ Charity Foundation helps low-income young people who are not in employment, education or training to enter the workplace and develop vocational skills. The foundation funds both individuals and charities with individual grants of up to £1,500 and charity grants of up to £10,000 per annum available, with awards for three years open to consideration.
#Merky Foundation
Founded by Stormzy, the #Merky Foundation exists to elevate, support and amplify the issues and the voices of the Black community. The Stormzy Scholarship was launched in 2018 and has provided financial support to 32 UK Black students.
Five years on, HSBC UK has pledged a further £2m in support of 30 new Stormzy Scholarships over the next three years (2024-26). The #Merky Foundation will continue to fund a further two students per year.
Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation
Established in 2000, Skipton Building Society Charitable Foundation supports registered charities throughout the UK that are working to improve the wellbeing, welfare and education of children and adults. The foundation has supported over 500 charities in the last 5 years, with donations of up to £6,000, giving away a total of £2.9 million.
Turkish Education Foundation UK
The Turkish Educational Foundation UK provides access to high-quality education for young Turks who are academically talented but are in need of financial assistance. Enabling them to pursue their studies at undergraduate institutions in Turkey, as well as offering scholarships of up to £50,000 for graduate studies at selective educational institutions in the UK.
