Five rugby players making a difference: on and off the field

With all eyes on the Rugby World Cup, we’re taking a deeper dive into the lives of the players making an impact on and off the playing field. In this article, we explore some of the remarkable rugby players starting foundations, supporting charities and giving back to their communities.

Maro Itoje, England

Maro Itoje, a rising star in English rugby, has a deep passion for education. He launched The Pearl Fund, working in partnership with World Vision UK and CDLi, providing financial support to disadvantaged students in Nigeria and other African countries. He was named in the 2023 Powerlist for most influential black people in the UK and won the Leadership Award for his philanthropic work at the Best Of Africa Awards 2022.

Siya Kolisi, South Africa

Siya Kolisi, the inspirational captain of the South African rugby team, is actively involved in improving the lives of underprivileged communities. He co-founded the Kolisi Foundation with his wife, Rachel, which aims to bring about systemic change by creating safe spaces through sport and education, addressing gender-based violence, and contributing to food security.

Beauden Barrett, New Zealand

Beauden Barrett, fullback for the New Zealand national team, is a maestro on the field and a compassionate charity supporter off of it. Beauden along with his siblings, Scott, Jordie and Zara, are patrons of New Zealand charity, UpsideDowns’ Education Trust. Helping to further their mission to give a voice to every Kiwi kid with Down syndrome.

George North, Wales

George North, a powerhouse in the Welsh national rugby team, stands out not only for his remarkable performances on the field but also for his involvement in charitable initiatives. North has used his platform to get behind a variety of charity campaigns, including raising awareness for men’s health during Movember, auctioning limited-edition canvases to support the Lydney Rugby Club and donating his training kit to charity shops.

Josua Tuisova, Fiji

Josua Tuisov, the versatile wing or centre for the Fijian squad, frequently uses his platform to give back to his island community. Participating in various initiatives, from building schools to developing sports programmes and raising money to help reduce inequality and provide disaster assistance.

Rugby players’ dedication goes beyond the field, they are philanthropists and community leaders. Through their foundations, community work and direct involvement in charitable activities, this is just a snapshot of the players making a significant impact beyond the rugby field.
