This August, we marked the 16th World Humanitarian Day, so we’re looking at some of the UK trusts and foundations supporting humanitarian work in the UK and beyond.
This August, we marked the 16th World Humanitarian Day. World Humanitarian Day honours humanitarian workers who were killed and injured in the course of their work, as well as all aid and health workers who continue to provide life-saving support and protection to people most in need. In honour of that day, we’re looking at some of the UK trusts and foundations supporting humanitarian work in the UK and beyond.
Wellcome
Wellcome is a global foundation established in 1936 after the death of Sir Henry Wellcome. Sir Henry was a pharmaceutical entrepreneur whose drug designs later inspired the creation of the first leukaemia drug, immune suppressants and antivirals.
The Wellcome Trust supports discovery research into life, health, and wellbeing, taking on three worldwide health challenges: mental health, infectious disease, and climate and health.
The Garfield Weston Foundation
Founded in 1958 by Canadian businessman Garfield Weston, the Garfield Weston Foundation gives away £90 million to UK charities every year.
The foundation supports charities making a positive difference in the UK in areas including welfare, youth, community, environment, education, health, arts, heritage, and faith.
The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation
Founded in 1961, The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK.
The foundation’s main aims are to improve our natural world, secure a fairer future and strengthen the bonds in communities in the UK.
The Joseph Rowntree Foundation
The foundation was created by Joseph Rowntree in 1904 to provide housing in communities and to tackle the root causes of the major social problems afflicting the UK.
Now, the foundation is working to speed up and support the transition to a future free from poverty by funding causes that bring about directional change, systematic change, and infrastructure for change.
Oak Foundation
Oak Foundation was formally established in 1983, with resources originating from an interest in the Duty Free Shoppers business, which Alan Parker helped to build.
The foundation supports others in making the world a safer, fairer, and more sustainable place to live with programmes for the environment, housing and homelessness, international human rights, issues affecting women, learning difficulties, and preventing child abuse.
