Oscar season is nearly upon us! To get involved in the action, we’re looking at five Oscar nominees and the causes they support.
Michael B. Jordan
Nominated for best actor in a leading role for Sinners, Michael B. Jordan is committed to supporting young people and social action.
In 2019, he launched the Michael B. Jordan Outlier Society Fellowship Program, providing paid mentorship for 18-24-year-olds in LA interested in the arts and media. He also partnered with Colour of Change on an initiative for measurable solutions towards racial justice, and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, which is committed to creating social mobility pathways for young people in the UK and internationally.
Benicio Del Toro
Up for best actor in a supporting role for One Battle After Another, Benicio Del Toro is giving back to causes that helped him as a child.
As an ambassador of the Millo Romero Foundation, he continues the legacy of Emilio Romero, a coach who mentored generations of young athletes, including Del Toro. He was also involved in Bono’s RED and featured in the 2010 film The Lazarus Effect, a documentary highlighting this campaign to battle HIV/AIDS in Africa.
Jessie Buckley
Jessie Buckley, who is up for best actress in a leading role for Hamnet, has been campaigning for charities since she was a teenager.
She’s supported St Mary of the Angels, a community for people with disabilities, in her home county of Kerry. Alongside Dame Judi Dench, she fronted a campaign to allow Irish-funded mobile maternity clinics into Gaza, and she’s an ambassador for Tender UK.
