Four Wimbledon winners and the causes they support

Two tennis rackets and balls on a sunlit court.

It’s the time of year when strawberries and Pimms reach celebratory status. While we might not make it to Centre Court, we’re showing our support for Wimbledon by looking back at four singles champions and the causes they support.

Serena Williams

Alongside her older sister, Venus, Serena Williams is undoubtedly one of the most famous tennis players in the world.

Serena is a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador working on their Schools for Africa, Schools for Asia, and #EveryChildAlive campaigns. She also co-founded the Yetunde Price Resource Centre with her sister Venus. The centre offers resources for individuals and families affected by violence and trauma and was founded to honour their sister, Yetunde, who was killed by gun violence in 2003.

Andy Murray

Andy Murray was the first British man to win Wimbledon singles in 77 years and is well known for speaking out on behalf of the causes he supports.

Andy is a long-time supporter of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. In 2013, he donated his £75,000 winnings from his Rally Against Cancer Queen’s Club victory to the charity. The following year, he took part in Rally for Bally, which raised a further £20,000 for good causes.

Iga Świątek

At just 25 years old, Iga Świątek is already a six-time Grand Slam singles champion and last year’s Wimbledon champion.

Last year, Iga launched the Iga Świątek Foundation, which supports athletes through direct education, provides mental health and wellbeing support for children, promotes a healthy lifestyle and encourages education. In 2021 and 2022, she donated her tournament prize money to Polish mental health organisations on World Mental Health Day.

Carlos Alcaraz

Carlos Alcaraz, the youngest tennis player to be ranked world No. 1 in ATP history, may be best known for ending Novak Djokovic’s reign at Wimbledon in 2023 and defending the title in 2024.

In 2024, at just 20 years old, he founded the Carlos Alcaraz Garfia Foundation. This promotes three key initiatives for children: social inclusion through sport, improved physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and increased awareness of the problems faced by the most vulnerable children and solutions to help them.
