Eight rockstars topping the philanthropy charts

With Elton John on his farewell tour (again) and U2 breaking new ground with their latest show, we thought we’d highlight some of the ways rock stars have harnessed their platforms to champion causes close to their hearts. From humanitarian efforts to social justice initiatives, these artists have transformed their success into vehicles of change.

1. Joan Armatrading

Joan Armatrading is not just a musical legend; she’s also a dedicated philanthropist. She’s been an ambassador for The Prince’s Trust since 1983, helping young people from disadvantaged communities by supporting them to build the confidence and skills to live, learn and earn. She is also a supporter of CAMFED (Campaign for Female Education) whose mission is to eradicate poverty in Africa through the education of girls and the empowerment of young women.

2. Sir Elton John

Legendary musician Sir Elton John, known for his timeless classics, has dedicated a significant portion of his life to philanthropy. Through the Elton John AIDS Foundation, he funds frontline partners to prevent HIV infections, tackle stigma and provide compassionate care for vulnerable communities.

3. Bono

Bono, frontman of the iconic band U2, is renowned for his distinctive voice and unwavering commitment to social justice. He co-founded DATA (Debt, AIDS, Trade, Africa) and ONE Campaign, organisations that focus on eradicating poverty and preventable diseases, and promoting equitable access to resources.

4. KT Tunstall

KT Tunstall, ‘The Other Side of the Word’ hit singer, is an ardent charity supporter. Among others, she’s supported the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and has used her music to raise awareness about endangered species and environmental concerns. She was also involved in the Jo Cox charity single.

5. Roger Daltrey

Lead vocalist of The Who, Roger Daltrey’s impact extends far beyond the music scene. His devotion to charitable work led him to create the Teenage Cancer Trust’s Royal Albert Hall concerts. For two decades the iconic concert series has featured the best in music and comedy, raising money for Teenage Cancer Trust.

6. Brian May

Brian May, Queen’s guitarist, is a passionate animal rights activist. He champions various wildlife conservation efforts and co-founded the Save Me Trust, which exists to protect the welfare and dignity of wild animals. By supporting wildlife, business and the environment, May  is hoping to offer every species a better future

7. Mick Fleetwood

Mick Fleetwood, founding member and drummer of Fleetwood Mac, uses influence to support youth who have a passion for music. As well as helping young people in music, the Mick Fleetwood Foundation is also raising funds for the devastating wildfires in Maui.

8. Chrissie Hynde

Chrissie Hynde, the iconic frontwoman of The Pretenders, is not only a rock legend but also a dedicated animal rights activist. She founded Vegiterranean, an entirely vegan restaurant and actively campaigns on behalf of PETA, even getting arrested in 2004 when she led a protest against KFC in France.

These rock stars turned philanthropists demonstrate through their endeavours, that true rock stars extend their impact far beyond the stage.
